Who we are

Unity Within is a student-led, volunteer-based peer-support initiative founded under the Millennium Fellowship 2026 cohort. Our purpose is to connect students to trained peer supporters and, where appropriate, to qualified mental-health professionals.

Unity Within is not:

• A licensed therapy, counseling, or diagnostic service
• An emergency response or crisis service
• A substitute for a psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor, or other qualified professional

Peer Supporters are trained volunteers, not clinicians. Trainers and Guides are independent professionals who support Unity Within voluntarily, in an advisory or training capacity, unless a separate written agreement states otherwise.

By applying, you confirm

• The information you provide is accurate and complete to the best of your knowledge
• You are applying voluntarily and have not been coerced into applying
• You meet any minimum age or institutional requirements communicated to you at the time of application
• If you are under 18, you have the consent of a parent or guardian to participate, where required by law

If you're accepted as a Peer Supporter

• Complete the required training before supporting any peer
• Listen and offer support strictly within the boundaries set by your training
• Never diagnose, provide therapy, or attempt to manage a crisis alone
• Immediately escalate any situation involving risk of harm, abuse, exploitation, or a medical emergency
• Maintain confidentiality, except where disclosure is required to prevent harm
• Treat every person you interact with respectfully, without judgment or discrimination

If you're accepted as a Trainer or Guide

• Provide guidance, training, or advice in good faith and within your area of expertise
• Help us define safe, responsible boundaries, escalation procedures, and safeguarding practices
• Disclose any safeguarding risk you become aware of to Unity Within
• Understand that your involvement is voluntary and does not create an employment, agency, or contractual relationship unless agreed in writing

Confidentiality has limits

We take the safety of every student seriously. Confidentiality is respected wherever possible, but it is not absolute. Information will be escalated where there is risk of:

• Suicide or self-harm
• Abuse, exploitation, or neglect
• Harm to another person
• A medical or safety emergency

How we handle your information

By applying, you consent to us collecting and processing your personal data — name, email, phone number, national ID, and other details you provide — to review applications, coordinate training, and contact you about your involvement.

We will collect only what's reasonably necessary, store it securely, never sell it, and delete it on reasonable request. This project intends to handle personal data in line with the principles of Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

What we expect from everyone

• Act with honesty, respect, and integrity at all times
• Never use your role to pursue a personal, romantic, or financial relationship with a student you support
• Never share or discuss identifiable information about someone you've supported, except where safety requires it
• Report any concern about another volunteer's, Trainer's, or Guide's conduct promptly

Violation of this Code of Conduct may result in immediate removal from the program.

This is voluntary, for now

Unless a separate written agreement states otherwise, participation in Unity Within is voluntary and unpaid. We do not guarantee funding, stipends, or compensation of any kind at this stage of the project.

Where our responsibility ends

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unity Within, its founder, and coordinating team are not liable for outcomes arising from peer-support interactions, training, or advice given in good faith within this program. Participation is at each individual's own discretion and risk. Nothing here limits liability for gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Our name and branding

The name "Unity Within," its logo, and associated branding belong to Unity Within's founder. Please don't use them for commercial purposes or in a way that misrepresents your role without prior written permission.

This may evolve

We may update these Terms as the project grows and as professional guidance is incorporated. The date at the top of this page reflects the latest version. Continued participation after changes are posted means you accept the updated Terms.
